Looking at the most recently published national writing scores for young people, it becomes apparent poor writing ability is not a limited problem; it is a national problem. Only 3% of eighth and eleventh graders were ranked as advanced. This is embarrassing for the nation and terrifying for parents.
These scores from the National Center of Education Statistics are the most recent published ones and are from the 2011 assessment. The next national writing assessment is scheduled for 2030.

54% of eighth graders and 52% of twelfth graders performed at the Basic level
"Basic denotes partial mastery of prerequisite knowledge and skills that are fundamental for proficient work at each grade."

“Read, read, read. Read everything – trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You’ll absorb it. Then write. If it’s good, you’ll find out. If it’s not, throw it out of the window.”
